We provide emotional and practical support to those facing the civil and family courts alone. Christmas is a time for families coming together, but for many, facing an unexpected court case alone can bring anxiety, uncertainty and financial worries.
The justice system, as it stands, was not designed for litigants in person. Yet, every year, hundreds of thousands of individuals must go through the complicated process alone. It is a system that no one thinks they’ll have to go through, but when they do it’s often too hard to navigate. By helping them access legal aid, organise their documents, understand basic court procedures, and giving emotional support, our volunteers improve the situation for everyone in court.
From divorce to child arrangements to money claims, nearly 20,000 people came to us feeling anxious and scared about facing a complicated court system alone, and potentially changing their lives forever. They could be faced with losing their children, their homes or their safety. At this time of year, this can have a huge impact on families coming together to celebrate.
Our aim is to empower all those facing court alone. We are committed to standing alongside every individual going through court this festive season. You can help our services continue to stand with families across 21 courts in England and Wales this Christmas.
